Five Key Lessons for Control Rooms from Critical Communications World 2026

Critical Communications World (CCW) 2026 brought together public safety agencies, critical infrastructure operators, government bodies, technology providers and communications specialists from across the globe to discuss the future of mission critical communications.

One of the most encouraging aspects of this year’s event was the spirit of collaboration across the critical communications community. Whether discussing national broadband programmes, interoperability standards or emerging technologies, organisations were openly sharing lessons learned, challenges and best practice.

For control rooms and control centres across EMEA, that willingness to collaborate is helping accelerate innovation and reduce the risks associated with large-scale transformation programmes.

While discussions around mission critical broadband, artificial intelligence and next generation technologies continue to dominate headlines, the conversation at CCW 2026 had clearly shifted from vision to delivery. The focus is no longer on whether these technologies will transform operations, but how organisations can successfully implement them while maintaining resilience, interoperability and operational continuity.

Here are five key lessons control room leaders can take away from this year’s event.

1. Mission critical broadband is becoming reality

A major theme throughout CCW 2026 was the continued progress towards mission critical broadband.

The UK’s Emergency Services Network (ESN) featured prominently throughout the event, including dedicated end to end demonstrations that showcased the programme’s growing maturity. As one of the world’s most significant public safety communications programmes, ESN continues to provide valuable lessons for other countries planning their own transition from legacy radio networks.

Across Europe and beyond, many organisations are now moving from planning and testing phases into operational deployment. Discussions reflected an industry increasingly focused on practical implementation challenges, including governance, migration strategies, operational readiness and user adoption.

For control rooms, this transition is about far more than replacing communications infrastructure. Mission critical broadband has the potential to deliver richer operational context through video, location intelligence, messaging and data sharing, helping call handlers, dispatchers and supervisors make faster, more informed decisions.

2. Hybrid environments will remain essential

While broadband attracted significant attention, another message was equally clear: TETRA remains critically important.

Rather than a simple replacement of one technology by another, the industry is increasingly embracing hybrid operating models were broadband and TETRA work together.

This was reflected in discussions around hybrid networks, parallel operations and the practical realities of managing technology transitions without compromising frontline services.

For control centres across EMEA, the implication is clear. Future operational environments will need to support multiple communications technologies simultaneously, ensuring seamless connectivity regardless of the underlying network.

The challenge for many organisations is not choosing between legacy and next generation technologies but ensuring both can coexist effectively during what is likely to be a lengthy transition period.

3. Interoperability is becoming an operational necessity

Interoperability was a recurring theme throughout the conference programme.

Whether discussing multi agency response, cross border collaboration or integration between legacy and next generation technologies, speakers repeatedly emphasised the importance of connecting people, systems and information.

The establishment of ETSI’s new Critical Communications Technical Committee and ongoing support for initiatives such as the European Critical Communication System (EUCCS) demonstrate the growing focus on creating common standards and frameworks across Europe.

For control room leaders, interoperability is no longer simply a communications challenge. It is increasingly becoming an operational requirement that enables agencies to share information faster, coordinate resources more effectively and improve outcomes during complex incidents.

As major incidents continue to require collaboration across multiple organisations and jurisdictions, interoperability will remain a key enabler of effective emergency response.

4. AI is moving from concept to operational tool

Artificial intelligence featured heavily across the exhibition floor and conference agenda.

The discussion has matured considerably over the past year. Rather than focusing on theoretical future possibilities, the conversation centred on practical applications that can support frontline operations and reduce pressure on personnel.

For control room environments, the most relevant use cases include:

  • Assisting call handling and dispatch workflows
  • Accelerating information retrieval
  • Supporting decision making through contextual insights
  • Reducing administrative workloads
  • Enhancing incident management processes

However, a consistent message throughout the event was that AI must be deployed responsibly. Trust, transparency, governance and human oversight remain essential considerations, particularly within public safety and mission critical environments.

The consensus was clear: AI should support operational teams, not replace them.

5. Resilience remains the foundation of critical communications

One of the most thought-provoking discussions came from the Ukraine, where speakers shared lessons on maintaining critical communications capabilities during periods of sustained disruption.

The session highlighted the importance of resilience, preparedness and operational continuity in increasingly complex threat environments.

These discussions extended beyond communications networks to encompass cybersecurity, infrastructure protection, redundancy planning and organisational readiness.

For control centres responsible for emergency response, utilities, transport networks or critical national infrastructure, resilience continues to be the foundation upon which all digital transformation initiatives must be built.

The technologies may evolve, but the requirement for dependable communications and operational continuity remains unchanged.

Looking beyond today’s technologies

CCW 2026 also demonstrated how rapidly innovation is accelerating across the sector.

Artificial intelligence, drones, satellite communications, direct device to device communications and early discussions around 6G all featured prominently throughout the event.

While some of these technologies remain at varying stages of maturity, they are already influencing operational planning and investment strategies.

What was particularly striking, however, was that the conversation was rarely about individual technologies in isolation. Instead, the focus was on how multiple technologies can work together to improve decision making, enhance situational awareness and strengthen operational resilience.

What does this mean for control rooms?

Perhaps the most significant takeaway from CCW 2026 is that the future of critical communications is becoming increasingly integrated.

The traditional boundaries between communications systems, command and control platforms, operational intelligence and field technologies are continuing to blur.

Control rooms are evolving into information hubs that bring together voice, data, video, location intelligence and decision support tools into a single operational environment.

To support this evolution successfully, organisations will need solutions that prioritise:

  • Interoperability across agencies and technologies
  • Operational resilience
  • Flexible migration pathways
  • User centred design
  • Data driven decision support
  • Scalable architectures capable of supporting future innovation
