Introduction
Why the Wellness Edition?
As we usher in 2025, mental wellness in the critical communications space continues to be top of mind at Zetron. We recognize the unique challenges people in critical communications fields face, often operating under high-stress conditions that can impact individuals and communities, making mental health support imperative.
Some professionals in critical communications are frequently exposed to traumatic incidents, leading to increased risk of stress, anxiety and burnout. For instance, those managing crises often serve as the bridge between their organizations and the public, which can result in significant stress if not properly managed.
Similarly, telecommunicators, who are the first point of contact in emergencies, face high levels of stress due to the nature of their work. Recognizing this, the National 9-1-1 program has emphasized the importance of addressing mental health conditions within the 9-1-1 industry, advocating for interventions that bolster resilience and reduce suffering among these professionals.
As staunch supporters of mental health and wellness within the critical communications sphere, it feels only natural to dedicate an issue of Advantage to wellness. We’ve filled this edition with resources and content we have been collecting and producing over the years so you can have it all in one neat package. It may be a new year but the same issues remain and require continued strategic action.
Common Strategies for Improving Mental Wellness
To support mental wellness in the industry, there are several strategies that are regularly recommended by professionals in the field, but here are the top three we see most often:
- Implementing Peer Support Programs: Establishing peer support teams provides critical emotional and social support to employees, helping them cope with the unique stresses of their roles.
- Leadership Engagement: Leaders and organizational heads are encouraged to actively address mental health by implementing comprehensive wellness programs and fostering an environment that prioritizes mental well-being.
- Utilizing Technological Resources: Leveraging technology, such as mobile apps and telemedicine, can offer accessible mental health support, providing tools for stress management and immediate assistance when needed.
This knowledge has helped us curate resources we believe will help you form strategies of your own to tackle the topic of wellness in your organization.
In conclusion, as we navigate the complexities of 2025, prioritizing mental wellness in critical communications sectors is essential. By implementing supportive strategies and fostering open communication, organizations can help ensure their teams remain resilient and effective in their crucial roles. We hope some of the resources in this issue can be helpful throughout the new year.
Reimagining the Public Safety Response to Mental Health Crisis Calls
Public safety provides a lifeline during times of crisis and emergency. As society evolves and changes, so do the types of public safety incidents. These days, first responders are often tasked with triaging a situation that includes aspects of mental illness or a crisis involving substance use. Often police, paramedics and other first responders lack the training to properly respond to a call when someone is having a mental health emergency. Time and time again we’ve seen reports of mental health situations that have gotten out of hand, sometimes ending with devastating results. And often, it’s because nobody on scene had proper training to handle the situation. It can be extremely challenging for first responders that are insufficiently trained in mental health crisis intervention to know best how to de-escalate(...)

In 2021, Zetron surveyed emergency response professionals and used the responses to publish predictions for 2022 PSAP wellness trends. In 2023, we followed up with a new survey to see what’s changed. Based on the new data, we assessed how the 2021 predictions held up and how emergency communication centers are currently handling wellness as the world continues to transition into the new post pandemic normal.
